1915: After a succession of defeats, the Ottoman Empire entered the First World War. The state, which had already lost 80% of its European territory, collapsed. Nationalist ideology won over the Ottoman elite, revealing internal tensions across the Empire. The Armenians, who had been established in Eastern Anatolia for 3,000 years, rapidly became the enemy. Between April 1915 and July 1916, more than one million of them were deported and massacred. This was the first genocide in a century that would see more than its fair share. In Turkey, discussion of the subject has always been refused and concealed, the use of the word “genocide” forbidden. However, it is from within Turkish society itself that voices are now calling to be heard. This documentary provides a mouthpiece for two key people that could not be further apart : Hasan Cemal, a Turk, and grandson of one of the perpetrators; and Fetiye Cetin, a Turkish Armenian and granddaughter of one of the victims. The Documentary uses original archive from the Western Front to uncover the stories of seven of the men whose remarkable bravery won them the Victoria Cross, Britain's most prized military medal. The WWI Somme offensive lasted 141 days and involved 13 Allied nations fighting 14 separate battles. Day One of the battle, 1 July 1916, was the worst in British military history with 60,000 casualties. By the end of the offensive the total for both sides was a million. This extraordinary sacrifice was made for just six miles of empty farmland. Of roughly a million British and Dominion troops who fought on the Somme, just 51 were awarded the Victoria Cross. In this programme, military historian Dr Gavin Hughes travels to France to piece together the stories of seven of them. Their experiences, covering four key days of the battle, tell the story of the entire offensive. Gavin uses a copy of a 100-year-old battle map to navigate the Somme landscape today, using the map to pinpoint the locations of individuals and the battalions they fought in. The VC winners featured came from England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and New Zealand. These men came from every rank and social background. The programme features contributions from leading historians, who explain the broader context of the battle and describe how the offensive has come to be remembered, rightly or wrongly, as a exercise in futile military sacrifice.

In 1676, on explicit orders of King Louis XIV, Vice Admiral Comte D’Estrees led a Fleet of 14 war ships to the West Indies to seek out and destroy all Dutch holdings and their Fleet. But besides the royal order, D’Estrees pursued his own agenda, an agenda of revenge on an old nemesis – Vice Admiral Jacob Benckes, the new Governor of Tobago who defeated him a few years earlier during a sea battle. In 1677, the harbor in Tobago is a natural port protected by reefs, rocks, sandbanks and a strong four-star shaped fortress, and yet on a cloudless morning the French fleet sailed into this bay, ferociously attacking the 13 Dutch ships laying there at anchor. During this furious and brutal broadside-to-broadside sea battle, more than 2000 people perished including 300 women, children and babies that were hiding on supply ships. The burnt hulls of once proud ships sank beneath the waves turning this bay into a gigantic war grave, the day – March 3rd 1677.
